Before we understand which plants are pet-friendly, let’s make sense of what causes plants to be toxic?
Plant toxicity is nature’s way for plants to protect themselves from being eaten or destroyed. Surprisingly, many plants can be very harmful to pets and animals if ingested, causing some quite severe health problems for them. The main reason is the presence of calcium oxalates, which if ingested can cause vomiting, lethargy, digestive problems, and apparently poor coordination.
Here are some of the common plants which are harmful: Snake Plants, Monsteras, and Aloe Vera.
Here is the full list of plants from ASPCA, on which plants are toxic and non-toxic to our best friends a.ka. pets.
Here at Planteka, we have a special place for animals in our hearts so we have taken some time to create a list of pet-friendly plants which adds some leafy plant beauty to your space. These are some of my favourites: Calathea Orbifolia, Macodes Petola, and Pilea Mollis.
Take a look at the full list here.
