Why are plants important?

At Planteka, we believe that understanding plants is the first step to taking better care of them — and in turn, to taking better care of ourselves and the planet. Through workshops, courses, and design services in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, and online resources for plant care, we help people reconnect with nature one leaf at a time.

Plants are much more than decoration. They’re the foundation of life on Earth, essential for our survival and for the health of every ecosystem. Here’s why they matter so much — not only globally, but also in our everyday lives.

1. They produce oxygen and absorb carbon

Through photosynthesis, plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen — the air we breathe. A single mature tree can produce enough oxygen for two people each year. At the same time, plants help capture carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for climate change.

By absorbing CO₂, plants act as natural filters, helping to stabilise the planet’s temperature and protect our atmosphere.

2. They provide food, medicine, and materials

Nearly all life on Earth depends directly or indirectly on plants for food. From grains and fruits to vegetables and herbs, they form the base of the food chain.

But their importance doesn’t stop there:

  • Medicine: Around 25% of modern medicines are derived from plants, like aspirin from willow bark or quinine from the cinchona tree.
  • Materials: Cotton, bamboo, and hemp provide sustainable alternatives for textiles, paper, and construction.
  • Ecosystem support: Plants provide shelter and food for animals, insects, and microorganisms, maintaining biodiversity.

3. They improve our health and well-being

Numerous studies show that being around plants reduces stress, anxiety, and blood pressure, while increasing focus and productivity. Even small indoor plants can make a difference.

  • In homes: Plants purify the air and regulate humidity, improving comfort and sleep quality.
  • In workplaces: Green spaces have been shown to boost creativity and concentration.
  • Emotionally: Caring for a plant promotes mindfulness — it’s a slow, grounding routine that encourages observation and patience.

4. They protect and balance our environment

In cities, plants are essential to creating healthier, more sustainable environments:

  • Trees and green roofs reduce urban heat and provide shade.
  • Plants filter pollutants and fine dust from the air.
  • Vegetation absorbs sound, reducing noise pollution.
  • Parks and gardens support pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Even a few pots on a balcony can help — every bit of green contributes to biodiversity and climate resilience.

5. They help us reconnect with nature

In a world dominated by screens and speed, caring for plants reminds us of the natural rhythms of life. Watching a new leaf unfold or a flower bloom teaches patience, observation, and gratitude.

Every plant you nurture — whether a small succulent on your desk or a leafy Monstera in your living room — is part of a much bigger story: one of connection, growth, and balance.

Start by surrounding yourself with plants that are easy to care for and suit your space. Learn their light and water needs, and enjoy the small daily rituals that come with it.
